The Inspire European Directive requires governments to publish spatial data which falls under the remit of 34 environmental themes.
Government grants have been issued to allow local authorities to publish datasets but many can be accessed via a WMS server today. Below I will outline how to view these
In ArcMap open catalogue and then create a new WMS (web mapping service) to the following URL
If you don’t have access to ArcMap download the excellent open source Quantum GIS from this link here Quantum GIS.
Install and open Quantum GIS and create a new WMS connection as below
You only need to give it a name and the URL should be the following https://www.geostore.com/OGC/OGCInterface?UID=UDATAGOV2011&PASSWORD=datagov2011&INTERFACE=ENVIRONMENT&LC=0 as below.
Click OK and load some layers, hey presto you have environmental data overload!
One dataset that seems incomplete is the Conservation Area Layer my local council, (Hart DC I’m looking at you) do not have theirs plotted which is a shame and invalidates the integraty of this particular dataset.
